Student Spotlight: Adam Leary

My name is Adam Leary, and I recently graduated with my Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Grand Canyon University. I am proud to be a recipient of financial assistance from the Special Operations Warrior Foundation (SOWF), and I want to express my deepest gratitude for this opportunity I’ve been provided with. I was born in March 2004, two months after my father, Army Staff Sergeant Adam Kinser, gave his life in service to our country in Afghanistan. He was a proud member of the 304th Psychological Operations military unit. Though I never had the chance to meet him, his legacy has been a guiding force in my life. I grew up hearing stories from family and friends about the kind of man he was—courageous, selfless, and deeply committed to both his mission and his loved ones. Knowing that he made the ultimate sacrifice so others could live in peace has shaped my values and fueled my desire to serve others through healthcare.

Growing up without my father was difficult, but I always felt the strength of his presence in the stories I was told and in the values he left behind. His dedication to helping others, particularly through the unique work of psychological operations, inspired me to choose a career where I could make a meaningful difference. Nursing felt like a natural path—it’s a profession rooted in compassion, critical thinking, and resilience, all of which are qualities I associate with my father. Pursuing a nursing degree came with many challenges, especially financial ones. The generous support from SOWF allowed me to focus on my studies without the constant stress of tuition costs. It gave me the freedom to pursue internships, clinical experiences, and volunteer opportunities that enhanced my education and made me a better nurse. I’ve had the opportunity to serve my community, and I’ve seen firsthand how nurses can change lives, and I am honored to now be one of them.

SOWF’s support has done more than just help me achieve a degree. It has connected me to a larger community of individuals who understand sacrifice, resilience, and hope. It reminded me that my father’s service continues to open doors for me, even years after his passing. The donors and sponsors who support SOWF are making a tangible difference in the lives of families like mine, and I will carry their generosity with me as I begin my career. As I step into the nursing profession, I do so with pride, purpose, and a deep sense of gratitude. I hope to continue serving others in a way that honors both my father’s legacy and the mission of the Special Operations Warrior Foundation. Thank you for believing in me and for investing in the future of the children of our nation’s heroes.
