John Aloysius Koren
Major, USAF (Ret)
John Koren, a Combat Control Team (CCT) member for most of his 27 years in the military, is a Vietnam veteran with four tours in Southeast Asia. He was an original member of the prototype Special Tactics Team, known as “Brand X.” This led to his participation in Operation Eagle Claw in April 1980 that attempted to rescue American citizens held hostage in Iran. The Special Operations Warrior Foundation started with this mission.
John continued his Special Operations career with the following assignments: Instructor, Air Force Special Operations School; Commandant, Air Force Combat Control School; Director of Operations, 24th Special Tactics Squadron; Operations Officer, US Special Operations Command; and Commander, 321st Special Tactics Squadron, RAF Mildenhall, United Kingdom.
John was a Master Parachutist with a combat jump star, a Military Free Fall Parachutist and Jumpmaster, and a Combat Diver. He has been awarded a Bronze Star; five Meritorious Service Medals, three Air Medals, two Joint Service Commendation Medals, and a Vietnam Service Medal with three campaign stars.
John volunteers on the Military Outreach Team for the Fort Worth, TX chapter of the Project Management Institute. John also works in the corporate world as a program and project management consultant. John and his wife Nancy live in Euless, Texas.
