Command Sergeant Major Shane W. Shorter, Retired

Command Sergeant Major Shane W. Shorter most recently served as the 11th Command Senior Enlisted Leader (CSEL) of U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) headquartered at MacDill Air Force Base, FL. He is a leadership speaker and retired Command Sergeant Major with more than 30 years of experience advising and leading at the highest levels of the U.S. military. 

In his 37 years of service, Command Sergeant Major Shorter’s nominative positions also include CSEL of United States Indo-Pacific Command, Special Operations Command Pacific – Indo-Pacific, and the Joint Special Operations University. He served as a senior strategic advisor to four star commanders at U.S. Special Operations Command and U.S. Indo Pacific Command, contributing to leadership, workforce strategy, and operational readiness across organizations supporting more than 70K personnel and global operations spanning over 80 countries. 

Additionally, he has held many leadership roles in 1st Special Forces Group, including 1st Group Command Sergeant Major and Battalion Command Sergeant Major, Company Sergeant Major for Charlie Company 3rd Battalion, Group Operations Sergeant Major, and Operations Detachment Sergeant Major. He also served as a Junior Medical Non-commissioned Officer (NCO), Senior Medical NCO, Team Sergeant, and Headquarters Support Company First Sergeant. 

Command Sergeant Major Shorter’s military education courses include every level of NCO Professional Development and the Summit Course. He is a graduate of the Special Forces Qualification Course, Special Forces Operations and Intelligence Course, Static Line Jumpmaster Course, Dive Medical Technician’s Course, and the Military Free Fall Parachutist Course.  

Command Sergeant Major Shorter’s top military decorations include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Superior Service Medal (1 oak leaf cluster), Legion of Merit, Bronze Star (1 oak leaf cluster), Meritorious Service Medal (4 oak leaf clusters), and Army Commendation Medal with Valor. 

Shane has delivered keynote presentations at Special Operations Forces Week with more than 23K attendees and the Global SOF Foundation Indo Pacific Security Conference representing leaders from 19 nations. Shane has also spoken at the NFL Owners’ Conference, the Medical Performance Summit, and the Naval Postgraduate School, sharing leadership frameworks used within the Special Operations community. 

Shane speaks on leadership under pressure, resilience, workforce development, and building high performing teams in complex environments. His presentations draw directly from decades of experience operating in high stakes global missions and advising senior leaders responsible for large scale organizations. 

In addition to global defense audiences, Shane has engaged leaders from organizations such as USAA, the National Tennis Association, the University of Louisville, and the Pittsburgh Steelers, translating Special Operations leadership principles into practical strategies for business, athletics, and academic organizations. 

Through his speaking and advisory work, Shane helps leaders strengthen organizational culture, develop resilient teams, and lead effectively in fast moving and uncertain environments. 

Command Sergeant Major Shorter and his wife Leslie have been married for 36 years. They have one adult daughter and are proud grandparents.
